Serenade was originally choreographed by George Balanchine Serenade, set to Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings in C, Op, 48, a hauntingly uplifting piece, was originally choreographed by George Balanchine. To escape from an abusive relationship and resourceful enough to find a job as wardrobe mistress for a theater. The actress with whom she shared a room in a squalid tenement took an overdose of opium in an effort to escape a life of prostitution. Nellie joined the Union Army, because life in the midst of a war seemed safer than the one she had been living. She found a home with the 100th Pennsylvania Regiment, known as "The Roundheads" because of their religious beliefs. Her skill and compassion led one of her patients to write, "Even here, amid the roar and carnage, was found a woman with the soul to dare danger; the heart to sympathize with the battle-stricken; sense, skill, and experience to make her a treasure beyond all price." * She was equally at home managing a southern plantation full of abandoned slaves, a battlefield operating station, or a 600-bed military hospital. After the war, her deep-seated need to dedicate her life to a worthy cause continued to drive her efforts until she faced an enemy more lethal than war.
MWSA Review
MWSA 2011 Bronze Medal for Non-Fiction, Biography
Beyond All Price is a five-by-eight inch paperback book. The cover has a pleasant design portraying a gun battery at Fort Donelson, Tennessee. As Civil War fiction, this book presents a well-researched chronicle of Nellie Chase's career as matron and nurse to the 100th Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
Nellie Chase existed. The 100th Pennsylvania Regiment existed. This fictional account of Nellie's efforts gives the reader an insight to the early years of the Civil War; as the 100th Pennsylvania goes through training and campaigns in coastal Carolina.
Following her career with the 100th Pennsylvania, Nellie becomes the organizational force that develops the model veterans hospital in Nashville as the Civil War comes to a close.
Beyond All Price is a recommended read for Civil War followers. It is an interesting story that provides insight into Nellie Chase's life during and after the Civil War.

Biography
After serving just over 20 years in the Air Force, I made the ultimate job switch: to farmer and author. It was a drastic change, not to mention a drastic pay cut! I've been writing 25+ years and have been published in a variety of media: book, newspaper, photography, and magazine. I love to write, it seems to be a passion I can't ever seem to satisfy.
I've been publishing a series of books in the Dragonslayers Saga. The first book, Project: Dragonslayers is an MWSA award winning novel about an unlikely Special Forces team who are thrown headlong into the world of counterterrorism. The second book, Dragonslayers: Mind Games continues the saga where the team enters the twisted world of al-Qaeda. They must find the source of a mystery explosive, or risk losing more innocent civilians to attacks. This book was selected for the MWSA summer 2011 reading list. Third book in the series: Dragonslayers: Battle Rhythm, has just been released. This time it's Yemen, and the team finds out they're not invincible.
Also I've expanded my work in other genres. Out now is the best-selling contemporary romance, Cowboys and Olympians. You'll meet and fall in love with Leo Richards, a champion reining horse trainer as he tries to convince himself that he can love again after his wife and unborn child were killed in a fiery car crash. He falls for Katie Shulman, a rich, stubborn woman who just doesn't like cowboys.
A supernatural thriller titled The Hall is complete and in editing stage. Projected release will be 2012 sometime. You'll meet Marcus Bishop, wealthy Memphis book publisher; his new and terrifically eccentric best friend, Prince Mongo; along with a ghost and demons that haunt the old castle Marcus buys.
Also just released, the first book in a sci-fi trilogy: Space Crazy introduces you to Dar Meltom, a half breed alien who's had a rough life. He longs for a life in the stars, and as difficult as it is, his mother manages to give that to him. Space Junk, the second book in the Dar's adventures in space series is also completed. The final book in the series, Space Available, is in the works.
Keep your eyes out, in time; you'll have lots to read from me. Check back on my page to see if there's anything new. Become a Fan of Dragonslayers on the Facebook page and you can read excerpts from all 5 books (2 currently unpublished)
As always, I appreciate feedback and book reviews. I'm a small fish in a huge ocean just trying to stay afloat. I love my writing and pour heart and soul into each work I do.
Most recently, I was given a rare distinction of placing 4th in Ron Knight's top 100 Facebook authors of 2011. He starts with 8,000 and narrows it down to 100. An honor indeed.

Every year, the day after Thanksgiving my nephew Josh Kurnot and I hit the strip district to shop and have breakfast. This year was the day after Pitt's loss to the Mountaineers and Josh is a Mountaineer cheerleader and had on his Mountaineer hat and was delighted at what good losers the Pittsburghers in the Strip District were.
The places we visited.
After arriving in the strip district at around 8 AM and finding on street parking on Penn Avenue near 23rd St., we went to have coffee at La Prima on 21st St. and had a wonderful chocolate pastry. Josh had black coffee and I had a raspberry decaf latte. We always love the Italian proverbs on the chalkboard that the owner favors his clients with. Then we went to Stan's and bought vegetables for dinner tonight.
After that Penn Mac (Pennsylvania Macaroni) (home of all things, Italian, Greek and other imported delights) to buy cheese and roasted peppers to stuff and chic peas for hummus. Of course we visited "Dear Heart" at the cheese stand. Then on to the Greek store for pita and tabooli mix and greek herbs for salad dressing.

Josh bought a yellow scarf, bracelet and ring for his friend Chelsea, another Mountaineer Cheerleader.
Josh also wanted to buy cigars for our Thanksgiving host, Uncle Joseph La Monica and so he convinced me that I would not smell like cigars if I went inside the Leaf and Bean. What a place, it's like a shop in the Bowery was transposed into the heart of the strip district.

There were several reasons why I wrote SISTERS OF VALOR. As the wife and sister of Marines serving in Vietnam, I have always wanted to give a voice to the service wife of that era. That was a time when the
protests against the war were very personal against the serviceman and his family. It was a time when there was only letters that came in erratic bunches - no emails, cell phones, or even phone calls.
Usually, each serviceman was able to make one call in the thirteen months' deployment, and that was done over ham radio. That era was also the cusp of women's lib, so women had the additional challenge of trying to figure out what their role was.
Later, as I learned of friends whose husbands had been killed in Vietnam, I felt even more motivated to share the story of the service wife. At that time, with the hundreds of books about Vietnam, there were none from the wife's point of view.
What I have found to be very gratifying is that the service wives of today who read SISTERS OF VALOR say that I am telling their story also. The feelings of any service wife of any era are universal.
Another rewarding thing I have learned has come from the service men who have read SISTERS OF VALOR. Some say they had no idea what it was like for their spouse until they read the book. Others have told me it has opened up necessary dialogue between the husband and wife.
I have found that an underlying theme in all my books is the strength of women and how women pull together and can nuture and support each other. That certainly comes through in SISTERS OF VALOR.
The book is an excellent one for book clubs because of the many discussion points: what did the Vietnam War mean to us as a country and as families and individuals?; how have women's roles changed over the decades?; what are the myriad ways people serve "who only stand and wait?", etc.
My husband of 47 years, Frank, and I divide our time between Angel Fire, New Mexico and Birmingham, Alabama. Our greatest joy is our family; 2 sons, a daughter-in-law, and 5 grandchildren.

Talking Points for
How Can You Mend This Purple Heart
by Terry Gould
My background:
Terry Gould spent his childhood on small farms and rural towns across Missouri before joining the U.S. Navy in 1968. After leaving the Navy, Terry earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from the University of Akron, Akron, Ohio afforded by the G.I. Bill. He received his Masters in Business Administration from Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, Ohio.
Following a thirty-year career in marketing, advertising and public relations, Terry finally had the opportunity to write the story that had haunted him for more than forty years.
Through his story, How Can You Mend This Purple Heart, Terry hopes to inspire all Americans to recognize and honor the veterans of all wars, but especially the veterans of the Vietnam War. For they truly deserve recognition-an unconditional recognition so long overdue- for their love of country, their commitment to duty and their unselfish sacrifices at a time when it was so shamefully unappreciated.
Terry currently resides near Nashville, Tennessee with his wife, Barb.
About the book:
How Can You Mend This Purple Heart is based on the author's real-life experience told through the eyes of Jeremy Shoff-a guilt-ridden, Navy non-combatant who was injured in a car accident. It is a riveting story of the physical, emotional and mental struggles of war-ravaged young Marines wounded in the Vietnam War. "Purple Heart" is a no-holds-barred, powerful and compassionate portrayal of young Americans who returned from the Vietnam War to the comforting and healing shelter of a military hospital; wounded, frightened and proud.
The hospital, and the nearby streets and bars of south Philadelphia, became their home; and like any home, it served as a place to gather, to belong, to struggle, to find support and ultimately, a place to heal. And every day of healing brought them closer to the day they could go home. A day they would cherish--and fear.
Why did you write the book?
The story behind "Purple Heart" played its mind games on me for a long time. For some reason, that I still cannot explain, I abandoned all connections to the hospital, the war and my wounded friends for more than ten years following my discharge from the Navy. At some point, after I met my wife, these quick, uninvited bursts of memory would surface and find their way into words. After sharing these with my wife, my brothers and close friends-through lots of laughter and tears-they kept saying "you should write a book". I know now that my retelling of those experiences kept the memories alive and vivid. The book was borne out of a long overdue and personal obligation I felt for the Vietnam veteran and especially for my combat-wounded friends.
